Motivation in language learning and teaching

Recorded: April 12, 2023

How can we help our students to overcome barriers to motivation for learning English? How can we remove barriers to motivation from our own teaching practices? What motivational classroom practices can help learners stay motivated in the long run? In this webinar, you will learn how the concept of motivation in language learning has been defined and explored from various different angles, taking increasing account of the importance of learner’s personal contribution to the learning process. Specifically, we will look at the motivational frameworks proposed by Zoltán Dörnyei and Ema Ushioda, in which the learners’ “selves” – their identity, their visions of themselves as successful users of the language – get to play a role in their growing autonomy and motivation. Finally, you will be able to experience a selection of practical activities for your own classrooms

• Theories of second language motivation
• Practical activities for the ESL classroom
